THINGS TO DO
Walking
Winters Cottage is situated just outside the Cairngorms National Park. As soon as you step onto the veranda, you can smell the fresh air of the glens. A mile's walk away you can see one of Scott of the Antarctic's favourite views - get your walking boots on!
Cultural Sites
Glamis Castle, the ancestral home of the Queen Mother is 15 minutes by car, as is Kirriemuir, the birthplace of J M Barrie, author of Peter Pan. The new and very popular V&A Museum, and Captain Scott's ship, 'The Discovery' are only a 30 minute drive away in Dundee. Scone Palace near Perth, the crowning place of Scottish Kings, is a 45 minute drive. St Andrews, the home of Golf, the famous university and beautiful beach is 45 minutes away by car.
Golf
As Scotland is the home of golf, we recommend taking a turn around many of the excellent golf courses in the area. The local clubs at Kirremuir and Edzell are lovely courses to play, in stunning surroundings. St Andrews and Carnoustie (both famous championship links courses) are a little further afield but well worth the journey.
Food
There are many places to visit for a good bite and a nice tipple. The Drover's Inn nearby is a great little pub with locally sourced food and drink (a short drive away) . At the top of the Glen is The Clova Hotel with new outside decking area. Take in the views with afternoon tea (booking advised). For something a bit further afield we recommend Kinloch House just outside Blairgowrie: excellent food in a stunning setting.
Bird Watching
There is plenty of excellent opportunities for birdwatching in the surrounding area - we recommend visiting Loch of the Lowes for a chance to see ospreys, and Loch of Kinnordy for excellent wildlife spotting.
Fishing
There is excellent local fishing on the beautiful South Esk River which runs half a mile from the cottage. Licences are available locally and more information is available online or at the cottage.
